Renting a Luxury Car in Cannes: The Requirements

The question almost always comes up in the second message. On a supercar, the requirements are not paperwork, they decide whether the rental happens at all.

The driver

Age and how long you have held your licence

Two numbers, and they do not mean the same thing.

How long you have held your licence matters more than your age. With us, the licence must have been held for at least two years, across the whole fleet. That is not a commercial preference, it is what the insurer requires.

The minimum age depends on the vehicle. On the most powerful models, it rises to thirty. An Audi RS3 and a Ferrari 296 GTB do not carry the same risk, and insurance companies do not treat them the same way. We tell you the threshold that applies to the model you are interested in before you book, not when we hand over the keys.

If you are under that age, tell us anyway. There are two options: move to a model in the segment below, or take the same vehicle with a chauffeur. The second is often the better choice during the Festival anyway, when parking on the Croisette is quite an achievement.

International clients

Foreign driving licences

A large share of our clients do not hold a French licence. The rule is simple.

A licence issued in the European Union is valid as it is, no extra steps.

A licence issued outside the European Union remains valid for your tourist stay if it is written in French or comes with an International Driving Permit or an official translation. The permit is only a translation and is worth nothing without the original licence. UK licences do not need an International Driving Permit. The details are in our guide to renting with a foreign licence.

Either way, send us a photo of the licence before you arrive. It takes two minutes and avoids discovering a problem on the day, with the car ready and the flight already landed.

The sticking point

The deposit, and what it is not

This is the topic that creates the most confusion, because two different things often go by the same name.

The deposit is an amount held on your card for the length of the rental. It is not charged. It secures the vehicle against theft, damage and traffic offences. It is released after the car is returned, once it has been checked.

The deductible is what stays payable by you in the event of a claim, even one covered by insurance. It is an amount, not a hold.

On the French Riviera market, the deposit varies widely depending on the vehicle. A prestige SUV and an Italian supercar are not in the same category. We give you the exact amount before confirmation, never after. If a rental company does not tell you the deposit before you sign, take that as a signal.

The card must be in the driver’s name

A card in the name of a company or a spouse will not be accepted. It is an insurance requirement.

You need a credit card, not a debit card

The limit has to cover the deposit, which sometimes means calling your bank before you leave.

The release time depends on your bank

Not on us. Allow a few business days as a rule.

What gets overlooked

Mileage

Almost every prestige rental runs on a daily mileage allowance. It is the point clients look at the least, and the one that changes the bill the most.

On the French Riviera, the daily allowance and the price of each extra kilometre vary from one rental company and one model to the next. In other words, a low daily rate with a small allowance can end up costing more than a higher rate with a generous one.

Do the maths beforehand, not afterwards. A few reference distances from Cannes, round trip:

  • Monaco: about 110 km
  • Saint-Tropez: about 180 km
  • A day inland, Gourdon, Grasse, the Loup gorges: between 120 and 160 km
  • Italy, Ventimiglia or San Remo: between 130 and 190 km

We tell you the allowance that applies and the price of each extra kilometre before you book. If your plans go beyond the allowance, let us know: it is better to adjust it when you order than when you return the car.

Coverage

Insurance, and the deductible

The vehicle carries comprehensive insurance. What you need to look at is the deductible, and whether it can be reduced.

On the French Riviera, most rental companies offer a partial deductible waiver, charged per day. On the more expensive models, it is worth asking about before you set off, especially for a stay in August on busy roads. Ask us what applies to the model you are after: the answer is written into your booking confirmation.

Do not count on your credit card’s insurance. High-end card contracts very often exclude luxury vehicles above a certain value. Check yours if you like, but assume it will not cover a Lamborghini.

Logistics

Delivery and drop-off

We deliver to the address of your choice: your villa, your hotel, or directly to Nice airport. On the French Riviera, we operate in Cannes, Nice, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Monaco, Saint-Tropez, Mougins and Valbonne.

The car can be returned to the same place, or to another town in the region. That is useful if you arrive in Nice and leave from Saint-Tropez, or the other way round.

Allow around twenty minutes for handover. We do the inspection together, show you the car’s controls, and you leave with a phone number that actually gets answered. On a car you do not know, those twenty minutes save you a lot.

Two rules to know

Leaving France, and a second driver

Monaco is no trouble at all. It is under an hour from Cannes and part of most clients’ plans anyway.

Any trip into Italy needs to be declared at booking. Insurance cover outside France, and the terms of the contract, depend on it. That gets settled before you leave, not on the motorway at Ventimiglia, and the agreement is confirmed in writing in your booking confirmation.

A second person can drive, on two conditions: they meet the same age and licence requirements, and they are named on the contract. An undeclared driver behind the wheel means the insurance no longer applies. That is not a formality. In the event of an accident, the entire claim falls on you.

Before you arrive

What to send us

  • A form of ID or a passport
  • Your driving licence, both sides
  • A credit card in the driver’s name
  • The same documents for a second driver, if there is one

Send them over WhatsApp and we will confirm the same day. It saves filling in paperwork on a car bonnet with the suitcases still in the boot.

One last thing about high season. From May to September, and especially during the Cannes Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix, the fleet books up fast. The most requested models are reserved several weeks ahead, sometimes several months for the rarest ones. If your dates fall in these periods, write to us early. It is not a sales pitch: we simply cannot rent the same car twice.

Frequently asked questions

What age do you need to be to rent a luxury car in Cannes?

The licence must have been held for at least two years across the whole fleet. The minimum age depends on the model and rises to thirty on the most powerful vehicles. The threshold that applies is given before you book.

Is a foreign driving licence accepted?

A licence issued in the European Union is valid as it is. A licence issued outside the EU generally has to be written in French or come with an International Driving Permit or an official translation. Check the rules that apply to your country before you travel.

What’s the difference between the deposit and the deductible?

The deposit is an amount held on your card during the rental. It isn’t charged, and it’s released after the car is returned. The deductible is what stays payable by the renter in the event of a claim, even one covered by insurance.

Is mileage unlimited?

No. Prestige rentals run on a mileage allowance. The allowance and the price of each extra kilometre depend on the model and are given before you confirm.

Can a second driver be added?

Yes, on two conditions: they meet the same age and licence requirements, and they’re named on the contract. An undeclared driver behind the wheel voids the insurance cover.
